Win Again

I haven’t felt like this
As long as I remember
It’s warmer than it should be
On the east coast in December
Weighing all the choices
And the turns I took to get here
Thinking how hard the winter was
In Boston last year
The effort that it took us just to leave the house
The nights we prayed for summer, dreamed of getting out
It’s a long time gone
Wondering when the road will stop
You looked me in the eye once, said it doesn’t end
With Christmas here, another year
You win again
Fighting when the gloves are off
It leaves me then with no choice but to go
Maybe northbound, find a city’s beating heart under the snow
Trudge the streets til I get stuck and I surrender to the cold
Alone and buried I think that’s the only way I’ve ever known
The effort that it took us just to leave the house
Why did we pray for summer, dream of getting out?
It’s a long time gone
Wondering when the road will stop
You looked me in the eye once, said it never ends
With Christmas here, another year
You win again

December 26th

Winter sows the seeds for what I can’t explain
Too much time to sit and miss the rain
I know the feeling, I’ve felt the same
It’s not a thought I’d like to comprehend
Anything you can recommend
I want to be myself again
I never laugh if I don’t get the joke
And I only feel the fire when I smell the smoke
Ever since our first December 26th
It’s the only feeling I can fix
Now I’m sure that things can change
The wait is so much longer than anticipated
Tempted once again to rearrange the day
It’s born again, it’s always recreated
Sometimes I underestimate the ways
People act during the holidays
Christmas sows the seeds for what I can’t explain
Too much time to sit and miss the rain
I know the feeling, I’ve felt the same
